Early during the Unification era, the orbital plutocratic strongholds offered the first resistance as they were turned on by their previous servants, the puppet governments of the major nations that come under Unity control.
Initially protecting their launch stations with mercenary forces, they were quickly deserted after several Unity chemical weapon strikes. As a final ploy, the orbital stations threatened retaliation in form of dropped mass or nuclear strikes with supposed weapon stockpiles.
The orbital plutocrats managed to be the first major stumbling block for the Unity movement. The stalemate lasted for weeks of posturing, with the orbitals threatening retaliation is they detected any launches.
In reality, Unity used its new political power to find and maneuver a variety of satellite killers into position around the key orbital stations - black ops leftovers from the former great nation states. Built to detonate in a controlled manner to take out enemy assets, they were already in orbit and built to be nearly undetectable. Without fan fair, these killer satellites were used.
Handicapped, quickly losing atmosphere and power, the orbital stations were left to suffocate and freeze. As a point of principle, Unity intercepted and shot down all escape craft.
Those stations which had no actively participated in the revolt but remained neutral were allowed to empty themselves and be replaced by loyal personnel.
