One of the character ideas I've been mulling over for the past several days has been a transhumanist enforcer. It probably won't be something I end up settling on, but it is an interesting concept, and I wonder if anyone else has puzzled through it at all.
First, I want to see if I understand the basic concepts to see if that's the problem. Then I'll go into my actual issue.
Transhumanists are a radical, non-UEA sanctioned group which follows the overarching philosophy that the way forward is to somehow transcend the human condition and to become something more, whether through what we now think of as the Singularity, or merging of man with machine, or through some form of forced evolution.
Enforcers are the law-enforcement branch of the UEA. They are militant, brutal, and effective. They follow the UEA philosophy of efficiency and effectiveness while keeping the peace and punishing errant behaviour.
The problem I'm having is merging the two. Do enforcers have a baseline required memetic fitness? How does a transhumanist make that standard? How does he find himself in that line of work?
I guess part of my problem is that I'm having difficulties imagining how the transhumanist philosophy affects the behaviour and attitudes of the transhumanists.
