I'm really, really hoping that if nothing falls through (baby sitter calls out, sick baby, etc.) that I will be at the May game! But I'm have some trepidation about what I've thought up for costuming my technical doctrine administrator. She's technically part of the military as she's logistics and what not, but I just don't see her in military attire as she's not a combat character at all. Also, military camo in my size is a joke as it's cut for men who have no hips to speak of - not women who have had children! I have to go up two sizes and it looks like I'm stuffed in areas and swimming in others.
I'm thinking scrubs? The universal catch all for people that do dirty work in some reasonably drab color in a semi-unisex pattern. I would imagine that undue embellishment is not common among tech and this would be a wash and wear sort of uniform that also works for everyday life (you know that 10 minutes before and after work that you spend reading about work or talking about work). I would love to modify them a bit, but my sewing machine is on loan until the end of the school year to a local middle school drama department so that would have to wait. I definitely want to put name tape and the tech insignia on them when I can.
The only other thing I could come up with would be basic coveralls, but I'm concerned that I would run into the same sizing issue as the military wear because these are made for men that are just built differently than women.
Does this sound reasonable? So far? Because I'm about to get a bit more crazy...
- My character has never been under anything but artificial lighting conditions in her life. As such, like me, she's very fair and prone to burning.
- She spent time on Mars where dirt gets in everything.
So I'm thinking about covering my head/hair/face quite a bit to protect me/her from the sun and to keep the dust out of everything. The ready made product that I came up with is well... a Hijabi. Or at least the underscarf portion.
So yeah... would scrubs, ninja scarf and some combat style boots (more for the ankle support that I need than anything else) fly in this setting or are there any better suggestions? I'm totally open to anything that would work if I can purchase it at a reasonable cost by the event.
